The Music

Here’s a bit more about the musicians:

Foghorn Stringband

Internationally acclaimed Foghorn Stringband has been at the vanguard of a revival in American old-time music for over a decade now. They’ve traveled the globe, been signed to a major label, and inspired a new generation of old-time musicians, all
without compromising their love of traditional American music. But they’ve gathered new ideas and new band members too. Their unique sound still comes from the fiery, intertwining melodies of Stephen “Sammy” Lind’s fiddle and Caleb Klauder’s mandolin, but now they’re supported by the bedrock-solid rhythm foundation of Reeb Willms’ guitar and Nadine Landry’s bass. And when it comes to vocals, they deliver; four powerful and exceptional voices resulting in countless combinations of harmonies.

A typical Foghorn set is based around exquisitely rare old-time tunes and songs, but a vast knowledge of early country music and recent explorations in Cajun song traditions have molded a powerful new sound. Any band would be happy to have mastered one music genre, but Foghorn Stringband have a roaming spirit, and are already sparking new revivals of American roots music traditions.

The Gallus Brothers

The Gallus Brothers sound like a record collection found in the basement of a retired acrobat with a penchant for good old fashioned blues. Devin Champlin savagely syncopates on a reso-phonic guitar, while Lucas Hicks amps it up by playing percussion on a suitcase full of bones, bells and antique tomfoolery. Both are talented multi-instrumentalists and their sets are a mix of country blues, old tin pan alley songs, mandolin and fiddle tunes, and a dash of danger by way of acrobatic antics. They have played across the US and Canada from festival stage to smoky bar, wooing crowds with their fun music, their good humor, and their willingness to jump on a table, stand on each other, and juggle while playing a good old tune from way back when.

Here are a few links to them in action at a Boundary Bay Brewing Co. beer garden show in Bellingham, and opening for Le Serpent Rouge in LA, :

SmokeWagon

Skagit’s own Spaghetti-Surf-Garage-a-Billy sweethearts, Dean Luce, Randy Gauthier, Peter Bridgeman, and Matthew Linville, mix up the old favorites with interesting originals. They’ve been playing all corners of the Skagit Valley this year – the Edison, The Longhorn, The Trainwreck, Max Dales, and up in Whatcom at the Subdued Stringband Jamboree – getting people on their feet.

This looks awesome! Just what Skagit needs to brighten the faces of us web footed folk. I’m going to splash stomp my way to Winterstomp with my best dancing dress on. Love that I can bring my kids. Woo hoo.
